Touring ... Mount Barker WA

Enjoy a leisurely 45 minute scenic drive through farmland and forest, via Denbarker Road and Muirs Highway, to neighbouring Mt Barker, for a day of sightseeing see Google map.

Mount Barker is a small country town and the administrative centre of the Shire of Plantagenet. It services an expansive agricultural area, where there has been successful diversification into viticulture and the cultivation of wildflowers.

Historic charm, modern facilities

Settled very early in Western Australia's European history, Mount Barker boasts a number of lovingly preserved and unique buildings, including St Werburgh's Chapel and the convict-built Old Police Station.

Whilst cherishing its history, Mount Barker has responded to its growing popularity as a touring centre with the development of new visitor facilities to suit every taste.

The Porongurups

A picturesque 15 minute drive east of Mt Barker brings you to the unique Porongurup Range.

Rising abuptly from the surrounding farmland, this spectacular forest island is rich in rugged beauty, unique plant life and abundant fauna. A paradise for birdwatchers and photographers, the Porongurups is also home to over 700 species of flowering plants, some of which are rare, endemic or endangered.

There are many walk trails to lead you into this fascinating, diverse habitat. Take in the spectacular views of Devil's Slide, Marmabup Rock, Nancy and Hayward Peaks. Cross the range along the Wansborough Walk, or marvel at Balancing Rock.

Wineries and attractions

For wine lovers, the Mount Barker region has many award-winning wineries, many with cellar door outlets, and there are cafés and restaurants to suit every taste.

Mt Barker is also home to the Banksia Farm's showy wildflower garden, featuring all 77 Banksia species and 96 Dryandra species, wildflower interpretation centre, 'Touch, Taste and Observe' guided tours, and more. (Peak flowering April to November.)
